Acne skincare routine… What was once only a reality for teenagers is now also a concern for adults. Since it has an increasing impact on the world’s population – and we have a lot of questions about this concern – we came to demystify acne.

So, in this blog post, we’ll talk about the causes of acne, the different types, as well as what you should and shouldn’t do if you’re going through a breakout. And also, the products are indicated to treat mild to moderate acne.

What is the main reason for acne

During puberty, acne is almost inevitable… With a lot of hormonal changes happening during this period, it is very difficult to control the formation of blackheads and pimples. However, this is also an increasingly common problem in adult skin.

What Causes Acne?

As a rule, acne symptoms are not only influenced by one but a number of factors. Thus, it is mainly encouraged by genetics, hormonal changes, excess oil, lifestyle, UV radiation, and the use of inappropriate products.

Let’s explain how acne imperfections are formed…

Acne foramation

The triggers mentioned will lead to a stimulation of the sebaceous glands which, by overproducing sebum, will cause an increase in the production of corneal cells. These will then become deposited in the pore and clog it. This results in the formation of a comedo.

In this comedon (or clogged pore), there will be a high presence of sebum which, coincidentally (or not) is the favorite food of the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes).
Now, you can guess the result… Without oxygen and with the sebum trapped in the follicle, P. acnes is in the perfect environment to cause inflammation of the pore and thus create red pimples and/or whiteheads.

This is why, typically, there is a direct correlation between oily skin and acne-prone skin.

Can stress cause acne?

This is one of the questions we get asked the most, especially when it comes to adult acne.

Unfortunately, the answer is yes.

When exposed to stressful situations, our body produces hormones that stimulate the overproduction of sebum. This will lead to the process we have just mentioned.

Different kinds of acne

Although it is estimated that over 80% of the population suffers from acne, it does not manifest itself in the same way. While in some people it is more common to find signs on the face and neck, in others the symptoms are lodged on the back or chest.

Furthermore, these acne breakouts differ in terms of their typology. They can be classified as:

  • Retentional/ non-inflammatory acne

This, in turn, is divided into comedos:

-open comedo or blackheads.

-closed comedo which is red, raised lesions. Often with a white center.

  • Inflammatory Acne

And then there is inflammatory acne. This comes in the form of painful, pus-filled nodules. This will be the main type of acne that translates into post-inflammatory marks (HPI).

What should my skincare be if I have acne?

To attenuate the pimples and blackheads typical of acne, as well as avoid the development of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, in addition to adopting a consistent skincare routine, it is necessary to opt for a set of active ingredients with anti-inflammatory, seborregulatory, and also renewing action.

Thus we recommend:

  • Salicylic acid

This, in short, will gently exfoliate the skin, allowing you to attenuate inflammation and decrease the production of sebum. In addition, thanks to its keratolytic benefits, it will unclog pores and improve skin texture.

  • Niacinamide

Also called Vitamin B3, Niacinamide is one of the favorite actives for acne-prone skin. This is because it offers an anti-inflammatory action, regulates the production of oil, and even helps reduce enlarged pores and hyperpigmentation. In short, it evens out and protects the skin from free radicals.

  • Glycolic acid or retinol

With renewing action, both glycolic acid and retinol will remove dead cells, attenuate existing marks, and even out the tone of the face. Likewise, these two active ingredients also offer a reducing (pore size) and balancing (oil production) action.

Acne skincare routine: the products to use

In case you have mild to moderate acne we recommend you follow 4 essential steps:

  1. cleaning
  2. treatment
  3. hydration
  4. protection.

Start by cleansing your face using the CeraVe Blemish control cleanser. It can be used both morning and night and has a very comfortable texture enriched with 2% salicylic acid and niacinamide.
In other words, it reduces the appearance of spots and comedones while removing excess oil.

La roche posay effaclar mat

Immediately after, it is time to apply the LRP Effaclar Mat. With a triple action, it has an oil-free formula, acting as a moisturizer while offering an anti-shine action and reducing enlarged pores.

To finish the morning routine, it is essential to apply sunscreen. This is the step that will prevent the formation of post-acne marks and protect the UV rays from worsening inflammation.
For this purpose, we recommend that you apply La Roche Posay Anthelios Oil Correct Spf50.
Composed of salicylic acid, niacinamide, and zinc, as well as broad-spectrum sunscreens, this sunscreen offers a mattifying finish for 12 hours while letting the skin breathe.

For your evening routine, after cleansing your face with blemish control cleanser, we recommend that you apply the CeraVe Blemish Control Resurfacing Serum.
Formulated with encapsulated retinol, niacinamide, and ceramides, this serum reduces the appearance of post-acne marks while evening out skin texture and tone.

Note: In case you feel that using this serum is drying out your skin, replace LRP Effaclar Mat with LRP Effaclar H– a care that hydrates, balances, and soothes oily skin.

Finally, if you want to include a localized anti-imperfection treatment, we recommend Isdin Acniben on the spot. With a quick-drying texture, it is invisible on makeup while helping to dry out blemishes and prevent the development of marks.
Its main ingredients are salicylic acid, niacinamide, and mandelic acid.

Acne skincare routine top hints:

Some tips to make your routine more effective and get faster results.

What you should do:

  1. Prefer oil-free cosmetics (including makeup).
  2. Do a light exfoliation of the face once/twice a week.
  3. Prefer whole carbohydrates, vegetables, and omega-3-rich foods (like salmon).
  4. Avoid polluted environments.
  5. Wear sunscreen daily.

What you should not do:

  1. Do not wash your face too much. Overwashing your face/body will have the reverse effect. That is, you will not be removing excess oil, but rather encouraging even more oil production due to the excessive dryness of the skin. So wash your face twice a day.
  2. It is imperative that you do not mess with pimples/blackheads.
  3. Cut down on foods high in fats, alcohol, and/or sugars.
