What is a perfume’s olfactory family? What is its relevance? How can I identify them? – Learn about the 6 main ones.
Personally (and I’m a true perfume lover with 7 at home), having one for every occasion is not a whim… But rather a fundamental step to feeling confident throughout the day. I mean, not every day we feel the same and since I see fragrances as a unique trait -and scientifically it is-, I need to have an essence that matches my mood. Let me explain, on a light day I will probably opt for a more floral scent. On a more frenetic day, I might prefer a more citrusy one to boost my energy. However, I realized that they all have one thing in common: they are all chypre. And that is why I am writing this post.
What is a perfume’s olfactory family?
Have you ever realized that many of them have similar smells? Since I believe so, I say you are not alone!
Although we are sometimes attracted to different scents, in most cases we are loyal to fragrances from the same olfactory family.
By definition, an olfactory family is a rating of different types of scents where a predominant olfactory note stands out. But it is important to emphasize two aspects:
- It is not because two perfumes have the same ingredients that they belong to the same family.
- There are subdivisions of the families. In other words, there can be more than one prevalent family in a fragrance. That is, in a Floral Woody perfume, the foral family stands out firstly, and then the woody family prevails.
Once we understand this concept, it is much easier to understand our preferences, as well as to demystify the nature of a fragrance when it is time to buy a new one.
How many olfactory families are there?
The exact number is not agreed upon. But we consider that there are mainly 6 categories. They are:
> Woody
In the first family, expressively seductive, elegant, majestic, strong, and unforgettable scents stand out! With the longest-lasting scents, these perfumes immediately take you to a comforting place that comes from the mix of woods.
In addition, the notes of sandalwood, cedarwood, patchouli, vetiver, among others, stand out. It can thus assume a more dry or warm and opulent feel.
> Aromatic
Aromatic fragrances are marked by a great array of green and fresh notes. It transports us into a refreshing natural world, rich in raw materials. Such as lavender, oakmoss, coumarin, and more.
> Cyprus
In turn, the Cyprus family means exceptional scents, ideal for special occasions. Thus, it elevates sophisticated notes in a perfect combination of woods and moss with fruits and flowers. As a result, a more sober, mysterious, and haughty aroma rises.
> Citric
This one is quite easy. It is mostly highlighted by the freshness and lightness of the lemon. But also of tangerine, orange, bergamot, and grapefruit. Cheerful and energetic they are ideal for everyday life.
> Floral
Undoubtedly the most famous, the name itself tells us about its main ingredient: flowers. The most remarkable ones are rose, jasmine, violet, or lily, which impart a sweet, cheerful, as well as romantic personality.
The lightest and most refreshing are suitable for everyday life, and the full-bodied ones for the evening.
> Oriental
Considered the most refined, elegant, and enveloping of the families, oriental fragrances are composed of a blend of spices, peppery as well as warm notes. Therefore, ingredients such as vanilla, musk, and amber stand out, which gives it a sensual and provocative appeal.
To sum up…
Do they all sound good to you? Then why not take a chance and invest in a perfume from each fragrance family. That way, there is no lack of options. 😉
